Since 2020, the GRIP Genealogy Institute (GRIP) has proudly offered the Donn Devine Scholarship, allowing deserving individuals to attend the institute and make great connections with their colleagues. This scholarship is awarded annually to a prospective student who has not yet experienced GRIP and demonstrates a dedicated commitment to advancing genealogy within their communities through volunteerism and advocacy.
We were thrilled to receive numerous exceptional submissions. They showcased applicants’ dedication and passion for improving their genealogical research skills while building a people-centered community. The selection process proved challenging due to the high caliber of candidates.
GRIP’s 2024 scholarship committee, chaired by Pamela Sayre, CG, thoroughly reviewed each essay. After careful consideration, the committee chose:

After learning about the scholarship opportunity through a ProGen study group, VanDyke decided to apply. We are thrilled she did. Her dedication to volunteerism reflects the values and legacy of Donn Devine. A retired teacher from Central Michigan, she holds a Certificate of Research from Boston University. She was inspired by her instructor’s advice to “volunteer locally.” VanDyke began her volunteer work at the Genealogy Library in Gratiot County. Over the years, she has expanded her involvement to include indexing, writing newsletter articles, conducting client research, and ultimately assuming the library director role in 2020. Her commitment to continuous learning and community service exemplifies the spirit of the scholarship and focus of GRIP.
VanDyke has chosen to attend “Not Just Farmers: Records, Relationships, and the Reality of Their Lives” virtually this year and is looking forward to extending her knowledge and skills in genealogy research.
